What is the problem here?

When you log in to Orion, Orion stores some information in your browser's local storage. This helps the website know who you are, and keeps you logged in if you briefly close the window.

In early 2022 Orion was upgraded and the format of the information stored in your browser's local storage was changed. Unfortunately, this change meant that the new Orion no longer recognised any information stored by the old Orion. But instead of just disregarding this and starting afresh, the new Orion tried to use the old information, which caused it to fail completely.

So, if the last time you used Orion was before the upgrade (before early 2022), you may see one of the issues above. It's a result of Orion trying to use the old information stored from before the upgrade.

The button above clears the local storage from your browser. This will allow you to log in to Orion again. You should only need to do this at most once per browser.

Is this the same as clearing your cache or doing a hard reset? No, this is not the same as clearing your cache. The cache mainly stores files that are used to display the website, like images, rather than snippets of information.

Why can't we just fix the software? Orion is based on third-party software called ResearchMaster. They have determined it's impossible to fix this problem in their software, but reassure us that any future changes to the way login works will be tested much more thoroughly.
